Mass of Chrism

Published on March 23, 2018

Our Diocese celebrates the Mass of Chrism in St. Mary’s Cathedral each year during Holy Week. The Chrism Mass is one of the most important celebrations of the liturgical year during which the oils of the sick used for Anointing, Chrism used for Baptisms, Confirmations and Ordinations, and Catechumens which will also be used at Baptisms. These oils, then, are part of the life of our parishes throughout the year. This Mass is an occasion for the clergy and lay faithful of the Diocese to pray together renewing our commitment to our faith for the year ahead. During this celebration those present are called to renew their Baptismal promises and priests will also reaffirm their ministry by renewing the promises made at their ordination.
Bishop Dermot is inviting all those who take part in ministries in our Diocese to come along to this celebration on Wednesday 28th March at 7.00 pm.
It is an opportunity for us to recognize the many and varied gifts which we all have and use in bringing the faith to life in our Diocese and in our parishes. The bishop invites all members of our Parish Councils, and also the Readers, Eucharistic Ministers, Sacristans, and those who serve on finance committees, choirs, and all other aspects of the life of our parishes.
Following the celebration there will be refreshments in the Cathedral Chapter House and an opportunity for us all to meet and to spend time together.
